Big Star: The Short Life, Painful Death, and Unexpected Resurrection of the Kings of Power Pop by Rob Jovanovic is an informed account of the record producing industry in Memphis, TN during the late 1960s to mid 1970s - an intriguing period that saw the decline of Stax Records and the rise and fall of Big Star.  Included are tales of Alex Chilton hanging out with Dennis Wilson and Charles Manson, tales of the 1973 Rock Writers Convention in Memphis that was attended by the likes of Nick Tosches, Lenny Kaye, Richard Meltzer, Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe; and tales of late night shenanigans that went down in the Midtown area around Memphis' Ardent studios. The very beginning and the ending wrap-up of this narrative dragged on a bit, but the middle of the book was a page-turner, especially if you are into real behind the scenes Rock stuff.
