Lessons I learned from watching Mtv in the early 1980s:

First of all, everybody wants to rule the world...

...and second of all, Love is a battlefield...

But hey, you don't have to live like a refugee!

...cuz every girl crazy about a sharp dressed man

So if a problem comes a long - you just whip it!

And if your friends don't dance well...

...at least you know that

  1. Fables of the Reconstruction sounded like it came from a genre that had no name and had not yet been defined. Now, we know that genre as Indie Rock. The songs weren’t as immediately catchy as REMs first three (2 and a half if you want to get technical) records, but they were deeper and stuck with you longer. The lyrics still didn’t make perfect sense - but they now didn’t make perfect sense in the narrative form. Strange tales of strange characters that I somehow, mysteriously related to at 17 years of age (my age when Fables came out in 1985). The lyrics seemed as if they could have been lifted from the Band’s Music from Big Pink. There was an element of self-realization in hearing these lyrics - these fables filled with strange characters.

Beyond the lyrics, the sound was different also. Rock journalist attribute this to the time and location of the recording - London during an especially long, dreary winter. But I wonder how much of that sound is attributed to Joe Boyd, the producer. And I wonder how Boyd even came to be chosen to produce the recordings.

And I also wonder who MK Johnston is, the artist who designed the cover. I havnt been able to find anything about him, but the cover looks like a pretty accurate reflection of the art school trends of that period, something like a Pixies cover or a still from an alternative Rock video.
